This Past Week in CCD: Forest transparency and coastal restoration move up the agenda

Kenya hosted the REDD+ Global Summit in Nairobi, while coastal partners restored mangroves in Mombasa as forest integrity, carbon transparency and community resilience stayed in focus.

The week of 18 May 2026 put forests and coastal ecosystems at the centre of Kenya climate action. UN Climate Change convened the REDD+ Global Summit 2026 in Nairobi from 19 to 21 May, bringing together participants from countries implementing REDD+ activities, donors, partner organisations and other stakeholders.

The summit focused on forest monitoring, transparency, safeguards and access to results-based finance. Kenya used the Nairobi convening to reinforce the importance of credible carbon systems, inclusive participation and practical cooperation as countries work toward halting and reversing deforestation and forest degradation by 2030.

At the coast, KDF, Equity Bank, conservation groups and Community Forest Associations planted 150,000 mangrove propagules in Tsunza beneath the Dongo Kundu Bypass. The restoration drive targeted degraded mangrove ecosystems, coastal protection, biodiversity and community livelihoods.
